Our in-house engineering analysis and design capacities are unique in our industry. Providing specialized engineering analysis and design for the total rail support system, we are able to offer an unparalled level of technical expertise and specialist skill.

We have the demonstrated capability to conduct nonlinear finite element analyses of grouted rail/soleplate systems where the potentials for separation of system components, slippage, and nonlinear material behaviour are evaluated.  Hexahedral elements are used exclusively because they provide increased accuracy relative to the tetrahedral elements that are commonly used by “design-based” finite element codes.  Additionally, implicit and explicit numerical solutions are used depending on the degree and type of nonlinearities to ensure stable, accurate solutions.  Nonlinear analysis of a continuous soleplate system revealed interesting behaviors.  Bending of the soleplate occurs longitudinally along the axis of the rail as expected, but also laterally across the width of the soleplate which was not realized before the analysis.  This “potato chip” deformation produces uplift of the soleplate sides relative to the grout which could break the bond if the phenomenon was sufficiently severe.”
